Media release from Waikato DHB
Health Minister Tony Ryall has reappointed Hamilton accountant
Gay Shirley as a board member of the Waikato District Health
Board.
She replaces Gordon Chesterman who was elected to the board in
October but resigned shortly after he became Hamilton city deputy
mayor.
Mrs Shirley filled a previous vacancy on the board for 15 months
until earlier this month.
Mr Ryall said it was an exciting period of progress in the public
health and disability service. "I know you will share my enthusiasm
for meeting the challenges we face at this time," he said in his
reappointment letter.
Mrs Shirley today said she had enjoyed her time on the board and
found it challenging.
She chaired the Audit Committee and worked closely with chief
financial officer Maureen Chrystall and the finance team.
"It's an interesting area. Waikato DHB is a big business -
Waikato's biggest with a turnover of $1.1 billion and more than
6000 staff.
"In addition to that we are at the beginning of a $500 million plus
redevelopment programme which depends on our financial performance
being top notch. We need to be making surpluses to fund that
programme and the work I've been doing with the board, the
executive and the finance team ensures that is always at the top of
the agenda."
Mrs Shirley's term starts on 20 December and ends on 8 December
2013.
