Media release from CPAG
Child Poverty Action Group welcomes news that all primary health
care services are now free for children under six in the Wellington
region.
Public health spokesperson Dr Nikki Turner says CPAG is pleased to
see progress on the Government's pre-election commitment to provide
'zero fees for under-sixes'. Dr Turner says "We would like to
see this scheme adopted throughout New Zealand. Free health
care for under-sixes should be a priority. Any barrier that causes
delay when a child is sick is likely to lead to higher costs later
on, as well as greater suffering for the child."
"Parents should not be prevented from seeking medical care for
their children when they need it because they can't afford
after-hours
fees."
Capital & Coast DHB has agreed to a free after-hour scheme for
under-sixes across the region. As a consequence, Wellington
GP practices that were charging fees for under-sixes during normal
hours have now all opted in to the Government scheme to keep visits
free.
