Statement from WellSouth Primary Health Network CEO Mr Andrew Swanson-Dobbs:

The budget announcement isn’t a surprise given the various commitments the government has made for primary care over the last few months, including this week’s urgent and after-hours care announcement.

While we welcome the investment in key areas, this isn’t enough to address historical under-funding, pay parity and workforce pressures.

Too often the focus is on secondary care – investing in hospitals. While this is important, general practice plays a critical role. Primary care will reduce hospital demand through early intervention and chronic disease management, and support community-based services.

We are still waiting to hear about the proposed new telehealth service. Telehealth is an important tool, but it is not a panacea. It should not undermine current general practice or increase clinical risk to patients, and in our communities, particularly rurally, we need clinical staff on site.
