The Kaitaia Hospital is a 28 bed rural hospital with a busy Accident and Medical Department, Outpatient clinics, Operating Theatre’s, combined Medical, Surgical and Paediatric ward and many community based services.

The role of the Rural Hospital Medicine Consultant is to provide medical care to acutely ill patients in the Accident & Medical department as well as the management of inpatients on the General Ward. The range of medical care managed at Kaitaia Hospital is complex and interesting. The hospital provides care for some 25,000 people as well as the huge influx of tourists in the summer period.

Specialist support is provided from Whangarei Hospital. A generous salary package includes substantial support for Continuing Medical Education.

The role of Clinical Leader - Medicine will provide critical leadership input into our transformation into a health system that is fit for the future.

The Clinical Leader – Medicine will work as part of our leadership team to provide professional clinical leadership and most importantly support and guidance as we evolve our services.  Currently Oamaru Hospital is designated as a Rural Hospital, and includes a 24 bed inpatient unit, primary birthing unit, emergency department, outpatient clinics and is well supported with a wide range of community and diagnostic services.

The service evolution journey we are about to embark upon, will require us to be able to deliver services in line with the Southern DHB Primary and Community Strategy.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer this role will also provide strong linkages into the Rural Hospital Medicine Specialist workforce and training programmes.

The ideal candidate will have Fellowship of Rural Hospital Medicine and either Fellowship of General Practice, or significant experience working within a primary care environment.  They will also have proven success in leadership and be able to constructively contribute to our organisational culture – Waitaki District Health Services – a great place to work!
